Please join us for a Tavern Debate - Resolved: Hold police responsible!
Virtually every state and local jurisdiction, along with multiple federal agencies, has an armed police force that from time to time exercises deadly force against, or confiscates or destroys the property of citizens. In most cases, thankfully, such actions prove lawful and, when challenged in court, such actions found wrongful can be redressed through the award of damages and attorneys’ fees under the civil rights laws.
Unfortunately, however, such awards – if satisfied – are paid for by the citizens themselves through the public treasury of the entity employing the rogue police rather than the constables themselves. Wouldn’t a properly-designed legal system hold police at the federal, state, and local levels personally responsible, with fines and/or imprisonment as appropriate, for all errors or deliberate policies that cause loss of life or property?
What say you? Come join the debate! As always, this tavern debate is an audience participation event, with potential speakers (a/k/a attendees) being provided food and a variety of libations for almost any taste or temperament.
