- Dr. Robert A. Levy, Chairman, Cato Institute
Against the backdrop of the horrifically sad events at Sandy Hook Elementary, the nation is re-evaluating its gun laws. Reasonable persons should welcome sensible regulations. But sensible is not what we have in New York or Chicago or San Francisco or many other major cities. And sensible is not what the D.C. government tried to do – banning all functional firearms. Thankfully, the Heller case took a major step to restore sensibility in Washington, DC. And the McDonald case applied that lesson nationwide, to state and local governments. Bob Levy, who was co-counsel to Mr. Heller, will discuss those cases and examine the latest gun control proposals -- including a ban on high capacity magazines, reinstating the Assault Weapons Ban, extending background checks to private sales, employing armed guards at schools, and others.
