In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court recognized the Second Amendment right of individuals to keep and bear arms, and struck down a ban on civilian possession of handguns. The lower courts have since confronted numerous challenges to less restrictive regulations.

Professor Nelson Lund of George Mason University Law School will be discussing the various ways that Heller and McDonald have been interpreted by the lower courts, with special attention to issues that have arisen after Sandy Hook, such as bans on so-called assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
