The Columbus Chapter of the Federalist Society will debate "The Next Supreme Court Vacancy," with panelists Ed Whelan and Kent Markus. Mr. Whelan, a former law clerk to Justice Antonin Scalia, has served in all three branches of the federal government, including in the Department of Justice as principal deputy in the Office of Legal Counsel, and on Capitol Hill as General Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Mr. Whelan is a prolific contributor to National Review Online and a frequent speaker on the Supreme Court. Markus served as deputy chief of staff at the Department of Justice and Counselor to Attorney General Janet Reno before joining the Capital University Law School Faculty in 1998. Mr. Markus has also served as chief of staff at the Democratic National Committee, chief of staff for former Attorney General Lee Fisher, and on the staffs of former U.S. House Speakers Carl Albert and Tip O'Neill.
