Jeffrey S. Jacobson

Partner, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP

Jeffrey Jacobson is a litigation partner who focuses his practice on the defense of consumer and securities class actions and on the electronic discovery challenges presented by complex litigation and investigative matters. Mr. Jacobson is recommended by The Legal 500 US (2011) for Securities Litigation and Data Protection and Privacy and is recognized as a Securities Litigation “Star” in the IFLR Benchmark Litigation Guide (2010).

Because class actions can become costly and extended distractions, Mr. Jacobson strives not only to conclude a matter in the client’s favor, but to do so as quickly and inexpensively as possible. This may mean, for example, moving the court to deny class certification at the earliest stages of a case, seeking quick summary judgment on the key issues underlying the class motion, or devising a settlement that costs less than the price of litigating the case. In matters requiring extensive electronic discovery, where unnecessary steps can multiply costs, Mr. Jacobson similarly focuses on avoiding unnecessary tasks and minimizing vendor costs. Mr. Jacobson has written extensively on class action defense and e-discovery strategies for the New York Law JournalClass Action Litigation ReportProduct Liability Law 360Bloomberg Class Action Litigation Reporter, and other publications.

Mr. Jacobson joined Debevoise in 1997 and became a partner in 2005. He received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 1996, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, winner of the Wien Labor Prize and Managing Editor of the Journal of Law and Social Problems. In 1993, he obtained his Master of Governmental Administration degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels Center of Government. In 1992, he received his B.A. cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He was the assistant to the Commissioner and acting public affairs officer for the City of Philadelphia, Department of Streets, from 1992 to 1993.
