Chad Readler handles civil, criminal, and constitutional matters, with an emphasis on appellate litigation. Before the United States Supreme Court, for example, Chad has assisted in successfully representing clients in Kansas v. Marsh, 126 S. Ct. 2516 (2006); Lorillard Tobacco Co. v. Reilly, 533 U.S. 525 (2001); Becker v. Montgomery, 532 U.S. 757 (2001); Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama v. Garrett, 531 U.S. 356 (2001); and Kimel v. Florida Board of Regents, 528 U.S. 62 (2000).

Outside of the U.S. Supreme Court, Chad's recent appellate victories include vacating a $250 million punitive damages award entered against Prudential Securities (Burns v. Prudential Securities, Inc., 167 Ohio App. 3d 809 (Ohio Ct. App. 2006)), vacating a $44 million damages award, including a $32 million punitive damages award, entered against First American Title Insurance Company in an unfair competition case (Chicago Title Ins. Corp. v. Magnuson, 487 F.3d 985 (6th Cir. 2007)), vacating a federal mail fraud conviction for a client involved in financing candidates for state office (United States v. Turner, 465 F.3d 667 (6th Cir. 2006)), defending the constitutionality of Ohio's charter school system (State ex rel. Ohio Congress of Parents and Teachers v. State Board of Education, 111 Ohio St. 3d 568 (2006)), and securing habeas corpus relief for a client serving a life sentence for murder (Fulcher v. Motley, 444 F.3d 791 (6th Cir. 2006)).

Chad's litigation experiences span a range of constitutional issues, including the First Amendment, and his past cases have involved issues ranging from products liability to employment and labor law. Currently, Chad is representing Sherwin-Williams in federal and state court lead paint-related litigation, and he is involved in federal appeals involving issues ranging from the vesting of employee benefits for union retirees to alleged insider trading and conspiracy. Previously, Chad was part of the successful team representing R.J. Reynolds against a $2 billion class action lawsuit brought by union trust funds, where Chad supervised briefing on issues including federal and state RICO.

Chad has handled numerous pro bono matters, including seven cases before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and a death penalty appeal in state and federal court. He is a frequent speaker and writer on appellate and constitutional law topics and is the past co-chair of the Columbus Bar Association's Federal Courts Committee, the past president of the Federalist Society's Columbus Lawyers Chapter, and a current member of the Federalist Society's Litigation Practice Group. In the community, Chad serves as chair for the Crittenton Community School, and he was recently appointed by Ohio's governor to serve as the public member of the state's dental board. Chad is recognized in the 25th anniversary edition of The Best Lawyers in America, and he has been selected as a "Rising Star" by Law & Politics magazine.
