Brian J. Murray

Brian Murray leads the Chicago Office's Issues & Appeals Practice. An experienced appellate litigator, he has argued approximately a dozen appeals (and briefed dozens more) in federal and state courts across the country. Brian also handles complex commercial, class action, and multijurisdictional litigation at the trial court level and has first-chair jury trial experience. His recent engagements have included matters involving antitrust, consumer fraud, securities law, the False Claims Act, the Clean Air Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, RESPA, section 1983, and other alleged violations of state and federal statutory and common law.

Brian's recent wins include a U.S. Supreme Court victory in a landmark case setting the boundaries of honest services fraud, a successful Seventh Circuit defense of a grant of summary judgment in a labor dispute, and a judgment following a jury trial recovering more than a million dollars for a company from a former employee. Representative clients include Abbott Laboratories, Abercrombie & Fitch, Continental Tire, Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services, Midwest Generation, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

Brian oversees Jones Day's lateral recruiting efforts. He also serves as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he teaches Complex Litigation, and on the National Board of the American Inns of Court Foundation (Seventh Circuit Trustee), the Executive Committee of the Chicago-Lincoln American Inn of Court, the Seventh Circuit Bar Association (Illinois chair, Administration of Justice Committee), and the Litigation Steering Committee for the National Immigrant Justice Center.
