Prof. Melissa Jacoby

Melissa Jacoby is the George R. Ward Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a faculty fellow at the Center for Urban and Regional Studies.  She recently has published articles reframing debates about home mortgage delinquency in the University of Illinois Law Review and Fordham Law Review.  With researchers at the Center for Community Capital, Jacoby is studying the determinants and consequences of bankruptcy and near-bankruptcy among low-income homeowners, and she also is a co-investigator on the 2007 Consumer Bankruptcy Project.  Jacoby is a member of the American Law Institute, serves on the executive committee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, and is the immediate past chair of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Financial Institutions and Consumer Financial Services.  Jacoby's academic career started in 2000 at Temple University, where she won the Friel/Scanlan award for her scholarship, and she moved to Carolina with a tenured associate professor appointment in 2004.  Jacoby graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania and clerked for the Honorable Robert E. Ginsberg of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Honorable Marjorie O.
