Mark Schultz

Assistant Professor of Law, Southern Illinois University School of Law

Professor Mark F. Schultz teaches intellectual property law, copyright law, trademarks and unfair competition, and legal ethics. His research interests are in intellectual property law, including the relationship between social norms and copyright law enforcement and compliance; intellectual property rights and individual liberty; and the effect of intellectual property on economic development and human rights in the developing world. Professor Schultz writes and speaks frequently on these topics. He has been quoted by the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Reuters, MIT Technology Review, Wired News, Guitarist Magazine (UK), and other publications regarding technology and public policy.

Professor Schultz received his J.D. with honors in 1993 from the George Washington University, and before entering private practice, he clerked for the Hon. Daniel M. Friedman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., and the Hon. Eric G. Bruggink of the United States Court of Federal Claims. Before joining the SIU faculty in 2003, he practiced at Baker & McKenzie (Chicago) in the firm’s Information Technology and E-Commerce Practice Group, where his practice focused on U.S. and international intellectual property and technology licensing, distribution, acquisition, and development. He also acted as outside general counsel for several early stage technology companies. Before joining Baker, Professor Schultz was with Pattishall, McAuliffe, Newbury, Hilliard, & Geraldson in Chicago, Illinois, where he litigated trademark, copyright, and Internet related matters for a number of major consumer products companies.

Professor Schultz serves the public locally, nationally, and globally. He has been active in efforts to define public policy regarding new technology. He has lectured at, organized, and chaired national conferences regarding law and technology, and served on the boards of several foundations and organizations that promote economic development, individual liberty, and free and open societies throughout the world. He is also on the board of SouthernTech and the Southern Illinois Entrepreneurship Center, groups that promote entrepreneurship and economic development in Southern Illinois.
